Wine in grocery stores – what’s the big deal?
We saw, read and heard a lot about wine coming to grocery stores on July 1st this year. What I’m wondering is – now that it is there, what do you think about it?
Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve been left nothing short of disappointed by what I’ve seen and (not) bought. I expected that the local stores would have wine arriving amidst a fanfare of discounts, specials and general, “let’s change consumer behavior” type initiatives. I’ve checked out the booze aisles at Fieldstone Farms Publix, Cool Springs Kroger and Costco and figured that prices are high (one bottle marked as “special” was actually only discounted by $0.11!), the selection is nothing to write home about and I’m left underwhelmed.
I’m letting the cat out of the bag here, but I regularly buy champagne for clients and my bottle of preference has been $16 more at grocery stores than at my old (and still) favorite liquor store. How’s that for not so very “sparkling”?
I did some online research and perhaps like you, had heard rumor of a 20% surcharge that grocery stores had to add to their prices – “maybe this explains it?” I mused, only to find out that it is a general TN law that all bottles must be marked up 20% from wholesale pricing (whether you buy from a grocery or a liquor store).
